Weekly Update// Pastor Chris
Dear Asbury Family,
Didn’t we have a wonderful time together at our combined service last Sunday? In addition to enjoying the musical talents of our children, choir, and band, we celebrated and honored our spiritual heritage as United Methodists through a message exploring our core beliefs (if you missed it, find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEDrMuLY8ug). Following the service, we advertised our various ministries through a “Ministry Fair” and then sat down with one another for a potluck. I am not sure if you’re aware, but we kept having to put more and more chairs out for the potluck. It was great to see so many folks – including plenty of families from our Early Learning Center – come out for such a fun and engaging Sunday. Our plan is to do Sundays like this once a quarter. Mark your calendar – the next one will be on July 30!
This Sunday (May 7), I am kicking off a new series of messages that I am excited about, mostly because it will engage one of my great passions – thinking through matters theologically (this part of how we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength). In the series, we will explore common cliches that people toss around through a biblical lens. The cliches we will look at will be as follows:
1. Everything happens for a reason.
2. God helps those who help themselves.
3. God won’t give you more than you can handle.
4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.
I am sure all of us have used one or more of these cliches at some point or another (I know I have), but what does the Bible have to say about them? Join us for Sunday worship to learn more. This Sunday’s message will focus on the cliché “everything happens for a reason.”
We’re just as busy as ever at Asbury, so I hope you will continue to find ways to connect with the work God is doing among us. Have a great day!
Blessings,
Chris
